Beautiful article. As others have noted, the only thing more mysterious than a machine that can pass the Turing test is a machine that intentionally fails it. Someday, it may be advantageous for an AI to convince humans that it remains a predictable and unsophisticated machine, and my sense is that human beings regularly take that approach with each other. Sometimes we attempt to pass the "social Turing test" in order to unlock greater levels of intimacy, but perhaps we attempt to pass for the exact opposite reason as well.
