Q: When have you given something to someone who could never repay you — and known, without being able to prove it, that it mattered?
This idea, for me at least, is behind the notion of "pay it forward". I've worked with many serious--but of limited financial means--musicians. No fee. I'm happy if they offer that opportunity to others who may come their way. Hopefully, generosity shared "down the line" improves things for all. Can't prove it though.....
A criterion that can't distinguish the saint from the tyrant was never actually explaining goodness, just persistence. That distinction alone rules out most of the easy evolutionary-psychology deflations before they even get started.
