In the second season of the dark and quirky show Dexter, America’s favorite psychopath falls for someone at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. In some ways, Lila West is perfect for him. She’s also a pathological killer, drawn precisely to Dexter’s shadow and willing to do almost anything to protect her “soul mate.” She loves, accepts, and enables his darkness so completely that she commits murder to keep it hidden. They’re a perfect couple.
Many people believe a soul mate is simply someone you really click with. The moment you met, the birds sang, a man with a violin appeared, and every light on the way home was green. This is the romanticized fantasy: the one who completes all your achingly empty parts, who accepts you exactly as you are and asks nothing more. Lila was that fantasy with the mask off; the rom-com is the same wish in soft focus — total acceptance, nothing asked of you. The wisdom traditions, meanwhile, have been describing something quite different for thousands of years.
In his Symposium, Plato tells a human origin story through the mouth of Aristophanes, a comic playwright. In his telling, humans were once whole — doubled beings with four arms, four legs, two faces, and three sexes: male, female, and androgynous. They were so powerful and quick that the gods, feeling threatened, preempted the danger by splitting each one in two. The result was a permanent ache of incompleteness lodged in the heart of every half. This, Aristophanes says, is the origin of our longing for a partner — and the root of the Western conviction that somewhere out there is our missing piece, the one who will finally make us whole.
Jewish tradition has the idea of one’s bashert — a Yiddish word (באַשערט) meaning destiny, something fated, meant to be. It’s rooted in a much older talmudic teaching: forty days before an embryo is even formed, a heavenly voice declares that this person is destined for that one. The Talmud states it as plain fact — this is simply going to happen. But notice what that timing implies. The match is announced before the person exists, before a single character trait has formed. There’s no guarantee the two will find each other easy, or even pleasant; they might turn out to be antagonists. And none of that would strip them of the title of soul mates.
In fact, Genesis’s opening description of the intended partner calls her an ezer k’negdo — a “helper against him.” The friction, it turns out, is part of the design. The classical commentators note that the phrase cuts both ways: when a person is worthy, the partner is a help; when he isn’t, she stands against him. And they point out that the word k’negdo implies parity — you can only truly stand “against” an equal.
The opposition, in other words, is between two people of matching weight, meant to challenge and refine each other, comfortable or not. Judaism makes room for divorce when the friction turns genuinely destructive. But for the ordinary frictions of sharing a life with another person, the odds are that the one challenging you is handing you exactly the growth you’d never have chosen on your own.

Lila West and Disney princesses can live that dream; your average, actual human probably can't. The real match isn't the one who completes you. It's the one who refuses to let the incomplete parts stay comfortable. That friction — awkward, unchosen, sometimes unwelcome — is the oldest kind of destiny we have. Whether or not the heavenly voice got the names right, the growth it forces is still, in the end, bashert.
