Thank you for affirming and validating my philosophy minor choice in college! (I had a psychology major.) It's been over 40 years since I took alot of flak for that choice - you "get" it!!! Thank you!!!

Thank you for your thoughtful essay. IMHO, there is philosophy and philosophy--2 different strains. One strain examines ethics and ethos from different time periods and cultures. That strain is very useful. It allows us to view these things from the safe space of academia. We don't need to do a Kerouac to learn, although we can choose to do one. It's permission to examine our beliefs and assumptions. OK, so far, so good. The second strain of philosophy drives me nuts! That's when the debate is about whether a chair is a chair or a group of atoms (it's both); if we are simply products of some being's dream (G-d?); define matter; etc. I like entanglement theory but most people wouldn't. When it comes to chairs, matter, and dreams, I paraphrase Descartes--I think therefore it is. LOL. I like to be practical IRL. But when I think of soul mates and Divine Purpose, I do get rather philosophical. I like to philosophize about the way people think and perceive things. So YES, keep on teaching philosophy!
