This song means so very much to me—the first Peter Himmelman song I ever heard—and is a blessing for all who have ears for it. But in reading this essay, I am once again profoundly grateful for artist insight into its conception and the process of shepherding it into the world…the idea that the artist himself can transport back to the time and place of its creation adds to my understanding of the creative miracle. In the decades since I first came to hear it, I’ve never NOT been grabbed by the emotional catch whenever it comes on, but now I have an added dimension—I will think of Peter thinking about a place, and a time, and a moment. Which somehow vaults the emotional arc I experience in its listening even higher. Amazing.
